Food frequency questionnaires have long served as a prevalent method for assessing food, nutrient, and bioactive component consumption. Despite their widespread use, these questionnaires have limitations, as they do not account for the absorption and metabolism of these components within the body. Metabolomics is offering a new avenue for studying dietary patterns through biomarkers. Utilizing epidemiological studies, we have employed measurements of metabolites in biological samples to evaluate the adherence to different dietary patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet.
