SUMMARY:Analytical Tools for Cutting-edge Metabolomics
DESCRIPTION:This is a joint meeting of the Analytical Division of the RSC and the Metabolomics Society \nAnalytical chemistry has been one of the driving forces behind the development of metabolomics research over the past decade. The conference will bring together exceptional scientists for a program consisting of plenary and invited talks\, posters\, as well as an oral session devoted to early career researchers. It will be an excellent opportunity for analytical chemists to learn more about metabolomics and its application\, and for metabolomics scientists to improve their knowledge of cutting-edge bioanalytical tools. \nFor more information and to register online click here \nTravel Grants and Bursaries \nThe organisers are keen to promote the attendance and oral contributions from early-career scientists. Both the Analytical Division of the RSC and the Metabolomics Society are pleased to contribute several travel awards of up to £200 each\, to offset the costs of travel and registration. To be eligible for these awards\, the recipient must be either: \nA student member of the RSC and a member of the Analytical Division\, or a student member of the Metabolomics Society OR \nAn early career scientist (up to 5 years post PhD) who is either a member of the Analytical Division of the RSC or is a member of the Metabolomics Society. \nThese travel grants will be decided based upon the quality of the submitted abstracts for oral presentation and each of the recipients will be required to give a short oral presentation during the early-career speaker’s session. In addition\, the best of these presenters will be awarded the Metabolomics Society’s best talk prize.

SUMMARY:Companion Diagnostics: From Biomarker Identification to Market Entry
DESCRIPTION:The New York Academy of Sciences is proud to present: \nCompanion Diagnostics: From Biomarker Identification to Market Entry \nLocation: 7 World Trade Center. 250 Greenwich St\, 40th Fl. New York\, NY 10007 \nThe recent growth in complex biological data has enabled a major paradigm shift in healthcare away from “one-size-fits-all” approaches towards customized\, patient-tailored therapies. Biomarker-based companion diagnostics (CDx)\, designed to identify responsive patient sub-populations or those likely to experience adverse drug effects\, lie at the heart of this personalized\, precision medicine movement. \nThis 2-day conference will provide a neutral forum for international scientists and clinicians from academia\, industry\, and government — as well as healthcare policy makers\, regulatory experts\, insurance sector representatives\, and other stakeholders — to discuss research\, financial\, and regulatory strategies that will facilitate CDx development and integration into clinical care. Presentations will illustrate successes and failures based on case studies; evaluate emerging applications of technologies such as epigenetics\, bioinformatics\, and nanotechnology; analyze diverse therapeutic target areas including the pioneering field of cancer along with inflammatory\, infectious\, cardiovascular\, metabolic\, and neurodegenerative diseases; recognize regulatory hurdles; and formulate solutions to better improve public health with CDx and personalized medicine. \nFor more information see http://www.nyas.org/CDx2014

SUMMARY:Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Plant Lipids: Structure\, Metabolism and Function
DESCRIPTION:The third Plant Lipids GRC is scheduled for Jan. 27 – Feb. 1\, 2013 in Galveston\, Texas. The program for the meeting has been assembled around the theme of “Emerging and advancing research areas in plant lipid metabolism and signaling”. Presentations will focus on elucidation of lipid signaling and lipid metabolic mechanisms\, strategies to enhance production of economically important plant products\, and new lipid imaging strategies. The GRC on Plant Lipids will bring together experts working to create and disseminate new research tools\, discovering fundamental paradigms for lipid-mediated regulation of development\, physiology\, and stress responses and developing new understanding of lipid storage and homeostasis. We are anticipating much discussion of basic and applied research on plant lipids. \nFor the first time\, a pre-conference Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) \, January 26-27\, 2013 at the same location\, is being organized by investigators at the graduate student and postdoctoral levels for investigators at the graduate student and postdoctoral levels. This seminar is intended to provide (1) background that will enhance understanding of science presented at the subsequent conference\, (2) opportunities to share research and to network with peers and experts in the field\, and (3) peer and expert feedback and supportive suggestions about ongoing research. \nApplication and registration is a two-part process. First\, you apply. We have already submitted applications for invited participants\, so\, if you received an invitation to speak or lead a discussion\, you can skip this step. Others should apply now. When your application is accepted (this may be one-two months from now)\, you will be notified by email and\, at that time\, you will need to register. Funding/payment is needed at the time of registration. \nWe are now accepting applications for the Gordon Research Conference and Seminar on Plant Lipids. Now would be a good time for you to apply to secure your participation. Online applications can be found here: \nGRC (any plant lipid scientist\, including postdocs and students): http://www.grc.org/programs.aspx?year=2013&program=plantlipid \nGRS (postdocs\, students): http://www.grc.org/programs.aspx?year=2013&program=grs_plntli \nPlease note: Postdocs and students who wish to attend both meetings have to submit a separate application for each . \nPlease include a brief statement (abstract) of your research with the application (see information in next paragraph regarding additional information needed for consideration of students and postdocs for funding) and let us know in the application if you would like to make a poster presentation related to your plant lipid research. The abstract does not need to be exactly what will be presented\, as abstracts are not published. The abstract is primarily for the chairs’ information. Posters presented at the GRS can be presented again at the GRC. The final oral presentation program will include a limited number of talks selected from the poster abstracts. Please indicate with your poster abstract if you would like it to be considered for a talk (or not) . The final program will be assembled by the middle of December and you will be notified shortly thereafter if you are selected to present a talk. \nWe have requested funding from federal agencies and industrial/commercial sponsors. At the current time\, several industrial/commercial sponsors have come forward with funding (see the Plant Lipids GRC website for their logos and thanks!!). We hope that grants and contributions\, along with a base of funds from the GRC\, will allow us to cover the registration costs for invited participants and all or partial registration costs for some additional participants. However\, we currently aren’t sure of the status of our grant requests. We hope to be able to indicate some fund allocations to participants as applications are accepted (before your registration\, so you will know when you have to make payment). However\, other funding may be available as we near conference time. Please indicate your need for support in your application and we will consider as many requests as we can. Most support will go to students and postdocs\, but some may be available for others. \nIn particular\, for students and postdoctoral trainees to be considered for funding for GRC and/or GRS registration: please submit at the time of your application or shortly thereafter ( to welti@ksu.edu ) : a short CV\, an abstract describing your work\, a short statement indicating how participation in the GRC/GRS will help you to achieve your career goals\, and a letter of recommendation from your current advisor. Please combine the first three documents into one\, and submit as a pdf\, if feasible.

SUMMARY:Metabolic Changes in Cancer: Beyond the Warburg Effect
DESCRIPTION:A new complimentary webinar from Science: \nMetabolic Changes in Cancer: Beyond the Warburg Effect \nYou are invited to view our panel of experts on Thursday\, April 19th\, 2012\, in this live\, online educational seminar. For more information and complimentary registration visit: webinar.sciencemag.org \nDate: Thursday\, April 19th\, 2012\nTime: 12 noon Eastern\, 9 a.m. Pacific\, 4 p.m. GMT\, 5 p.m. UK\nDuration: 1 hour \nSubmit your questions LIVE to the experts during the webinar! \n \nThe role of metabolism in cancer growth and cell survival is an area of growing interest. The shift in glucose metabolism from oxidative phosphorylation to lactate production for energy generation (the Warburg Effect) is a well-known metabolic hallmark of tumor cells\, and several key signaling pathways\, oncogenes\, and tumor suppressors―including Akt\, mTor\, c-myc\, and p53―are linked to the increase in glycolysis seen in tumor cells. Beyond fulfilling energy requirements\, highly proliferative cells also need to produce excess lipids\, nucleotides\, and amino acids for the creation of new biomass. In order to do this\, a number of metabolic adaptations occur in cancer cells that help generate these metabolites\, fuel growth\, and may also aid in the evasion of apoptosis. This webinar will delve into these issues\, with the help of our three thought leaders. \nDuring the webinar\, our panel of experts will: \n\nDiscuss the critical importance of understanding metabolism in the context of cell health and function\nElucidate the metabolic pathways thought to be involved in tumorigenesis and other diseases\nShare new discoveries and trends in research on cancer metabolism\nAnswer your questions live during the webinar!\n\nSpeakers: Morris J. Birnbaum\, M.D.\, Ph.D.\nUniversity of Pennsylvania\nPhiladelphia\, PA \nMatt Vander Heiden\, M.D.\, Ph.D.\nMassachusetts Institute of Technology\nBoston\, MA \nBrendan D. Manning\, Ph.D.\nHarvard University\, School of Public Health\nBoston\, MA \nRegister at: webinar.sciencemag.org \nProduced by the Science /AAAS Custom Publishing Office and sponsored by Cell Signaling Technology.
