SUMMARY:EMN Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:The Early-career Members Network (EMN) invited you to the Webinar series featuring: \nDr. Ntakadzeni Edwin Madala – Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology\, University of Venda (South Africa)\nMs. Babra Moyo – Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology\, University of Venda (South Africa) \nTitle: Overcoming the isomers challenge during metabolite identification by LC-MS technique \nDuring metabolomics studies\, metabolite identification is the most challenging step\, requiring in depth understanding of molecular structures. Despite the obvious challenges posed by unknown compounds\, isomeric compounds present undisputed analytical challenges. Techniques such as LC-MS and NMR have been used in combination or independently for identification of novel compounds. LC-MS is a powerful technique which exploits the resolution power of the LC technology and the sensitivity and accuracy of the MS detector. As such\, LC-MS has been widely applied in the field of metabolomics. \nTo learn more about the webinar\, click here.

DESCRIPTION:The Early-career Members Network (EMN) invites you to the Webinar series featuring: \nDr. Theodora Katsila – National Hellenic Research Foundation\, Institute of Chemical Biology\nVivi Bafiti – National Hellenic Research Foundation\, Institute of Chemical Biology\nTitle: Exosomal metabolomics in health and disease \nExosomes are nanoscale entities\, being informative based on their size\, number\, morphology\, and molecular content of their cell of origin and cell-recipient.  In this webinar\, we briefly discussed with Dr. Theodora Katsila and Vivi Bafiti some of the most recent advances in the field of exosomes as circulating translational biomarkers of choice when inter-individual variability\, drug resistance\, and adverse drug reactions are considered. “To us\, seeing is believing. At the same time\, by understanding the fundamental flaws in our perceptions\, we become more aware via metabolomics.” \nTo learn more about the webinar\, click here.

SUMMARY:EMN Live Webinar: Metabolic Reaction Network-based Metabolite Annotation for Untargeted Metabolomics: from Knowns to Unknowns
DESCRIPTION:The metabolome refers to the complete collection of small molecules in living organisms\, including endogenously known metabolites\, and unknown metabolites from microbiota\, plants\, foods and xenobiotics. Large-scale metabolite annotation is a challenge in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based untargeted metabolomics. In this webinar\, Prof. Zheng-Jiang Zhu and Dr. Zhiwei Zhou presented a metabolic reaction network (MRN)-based recursive algorithm (MetDNA) that expands metabolite annotations without the need for a comprehensive standard spectral library. Using different LC-MS platforms and biological samples\, Prof. Zheng-Jiang Zhu and Dr. Zhiwei Zhou showcased the utility and versatility of MetDNA and demonstrated that about hundreds of endogenous metabolites can cumulatively be annotated from one experiment. \nRegister: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/1747837981167991309

SUMMARY:The Metabolomic Epidemiology Task Group Webinar: Novel Insights into Chronic Disease: Perspectives from a Biochemist and an Epidemiologist on Metabolomics from the Nurses Health Study
DESCRIPTION:The Metabolomics Society’s Metabolomic Epidemiology Task Group presented their second webinar featuring two leaders in their fields — Dr. Clary Clish\, Director of Metabolite Profiling at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard\, and Dr. Heather Eliassen\, Associate Director of the Channing Division of Network Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital\, and Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health — discussed their experiences of metabolomic epidemiology studies from conception to publication within the Nurses’ Health Studies. The Nurses’ Health Study and Nurses’ Health Study II\, led by Dr. Eliassen\, are two ongoing cohorts of more than 230\,000 women initiated in 1976. In collaboration with the Broad Institute\, nearly 30 metabolomic epidemiology studies have been published from these cohorts to date. \nRegister: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/8491968527091866640

SUMMARY:Metabolomic Epidemiology Matters Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:Time:   7:00 a.m.–8:00 a.m. US Eastern Standard Time (1:00 p.m.–2:00 p.m. Central European Time) \nSpeakers:\nDr. Stacey Reinke\, Edith Cowan University\, Australia\nDr. Craig Wheelock\, Karolinska Institutet\, Sweden \nAbstract:\nThere are multiple inherent challenges in performing large-scale non-targeted metabolomics. These include a diverse array of issues ranging from managing multiple clinical collection sites\, accounting for unbalanced study design\, developing analytical platforms with high precision across large sample numbers\, creating the necessary data analysis workflows\, and interpreting the eventual results with clinical collaborators. In this presentation\, we will provide an overview of the pan-European U-BIOPRED project (Unbiased Biomarkers for the Prediction of Respiratory Disease Outcomes)\, which brought together over 40 academic and industry partners as well as patient organizations to identify molecular sub-phenotypes of severe asthma.
