Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Neonatal Research Group, Health Research Institute La Fe, Valencia, Spain

In 2007 I finished my studies in Biotechnical Processes at the University of Applied Sciences Wr. Neustadt (Austria). My diploma thesis was carried out in Dr. Bernhard Lendl’s group at the Vienna University of Technology with the aim of developing a mid-infrared sensor for the determination of hydrocarbons in water. Between 2008 and 2011 I carried out my PhD studies at the University of Valencia (Spain) at the Department of Analytical Chemistry in Dr. Miguel de la Guardia’s group where I was working on the on-line hyphenation of liquid chromatography to infrared spectroscopy.
I first got into touch with metabolomics in 2012, when I started working as a post-doctoral researcher in the Neonatal Research Group at the Health Research Institute Hospital La Fe in Valencia under the supervision of Dr. Máximo Vento. Since then my research has been devoted to the development of bioanalytical tools tailored for their application in neonatology. Our studies are aimed at detecting and explaining alterations in metabolomic phenotypes observed in different body fluids of especially vulnerable patients. The ultimate goal is to foster the use of metabolomics for unveiling mechanisms of action of complex, multifactorial diseases (e.g. hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy) and facilitate its implementation in personalized medicine as a way to improve clinical grading, therapy and prognosis in perinatology.
